5 Things to Say (and Not Say) to an Insurance Adjuster
Your first conversation with an adjuster sets the tone for the entire claim. Here's what experienced contractors say — and what they've learned to avoid.
Your First Adjuster Call Sets the Tone
Most contractors approach the first adjuster call as a formality. Experienced ones treat it as the most important conversation in the claim.
Here's what to say — and what to avoid.
✅ DO Say These Things
1. "I've completed a full damage assessment and I'd like to walk you through my findings."
This signals you're prepared and have documentation. Adjusters respect contractors who come with evidence.
2. "I have photos and measurements for every item on my estimate."
Documentation is your leverage. State upfront that you have it — it changes the dynamic.
3. "Can we schedule a joint inspection?"
On-site inspections almost always result in more approved items. Get the adjuster in person when possible.
4. "I'll follow up in writing."
Always. A verbal agreement is worth nothing. Email every outcome, every promise, every agreed item.
5. "The code in this jurisdiction requires..."
Code compliance is non-negotiable. Adjusters can argue scope — they can't argue local building code.
❌ DON'T Say These Things
1. "We can work with whatever the insurance pays."
This gives away your leverage immediately and invites lowball scopes.
2. "We'll waive the deductible."
Illegal in most states. Full stop.
3. "I don't have my documentation in front of me."
Always have your file. Never take an adjuster call unprepared.
4. "This estimate came from the homeowner."
Own your scope. You're the licensed contractor — you're responsible for the numbers.
Log Every Interaction
Write down the date, time, who you spoke to, what was discussed, and what was agreed. This log is your protection if a claim gets disputed.
AutoScope has a built-in Adjuster Log for exactly this — every interaction, timestamped and attached to the job. See how it works →
